When you think about your braces, you probably think about the treatment process, and actually having braces on your teeth. But post-care is extremely important after an orthodontic treatment as well! Of course, your specific care needs after your treatment will depend on your unique situation, but there's some normal items that you can expect once your braces have been removed:

  • Regular checkups:  After your braces have been removed, you'll still need to follow up with your dentist to ensure that your teeth are staying put. In some cases, braces may need to be reapplied if the teeth are quickly moving back, so keeping up with post-care is very important!
  • Retainers: Retainers are devices that allow your teeth to adjust and stay in place even after your orthodontic treatment. Because your braces were holding your teeth in place during the treatment, your teeth will be naturally inclined to move back once the braces are removed. Retainers will gently keep your teeth in place during the adjustment to make sure you keep that straight smile.
  • Follow-up treatments: If you are still seeing teeth shift shortly after your treatment, your orthodontist may recommend a follow-up treatment to better solidify your straightened smile. This might include partial braces or a different type of retainer to move your teeth back into the correct positions.

Orthodontic treatments are very common, and they have been used for many years to help patients get the smile that they've always wanted. Moreover, having straighter teeth helps to ensure that you can properly clean and care for your teeth. This helps to prevent serious dental issues from forming over time. Whether you are just starting to look for alignment treatments, or if you are nearing the end of your orthodontic treatment, post-care is the best way to ensure that you keep that smile looking great!
