The habits your child develops early on can help determine a great deal about their future.

You are probably already aware of this, and this is why you’ve taught your child to use good manners and watch for cars before crossing the street.

The oral health habits your child learns now are also important. They can mean the difference between a lifetime of healthy teeth and ongoing problems with cavities and gum disease.

At Temple Dental Trails, your kids dentist in Temple, TX, We want to help you give your kids the best start possible. Here are three easy ways you can encourage good oral health habits in your child:

1. Let your child watch while you brush and floss.

Kids love to emulate their parents. By encouraging your child to watch while you brush and floss your teeth, you can take advantage of their natural curiosity and mimicry. Take the time to count down while you brush or download a brushing timer app so your child gets an idea of how long to brush. If you need help developing good technique, let us know! Your hygienist will be more than happy to give you a hands-on demonstration!

2. Healthy eating habits are important for oral health, too.

You probably already encourage good eating habits because you want your child to be strong and healthy. The foods your child selects also have an effect on their dental health. Encourage your child to eat a variety of foods, including vegetables and low-fat dairy, so they get plenty of the nutrients they need. If your child enjoys sweet treats (and what child doesn’t?), make them part of a meal and avoid sugary snacking between meals. Encourage your child to rinse out their mouth after eating sugary foods and drinks – including fruit juices – so the sugars don’t stick around to cause damage.

3. Make dental visits fun!

Twice yearly visits for cleanings and check-ups are an important part of preventive care. To avoid anxiety, your child should know that these visits are normal. Even better, your child should look forward to them! At Temple Dental Trails, our friendly dental team loves working with kids and helping them develop an appreciation for good dental health.
