Invisalign Treatment, Step by Step

The first step in the Invisalign process is your decision to seek treatment to straighten your crooked or crowded teeth. If you’ve lived with tooth misalignment your whole life, you may have avoided treatment because you didn’t want to wear braces. But Invisalign provides a way to get a straighter smile without the typical inconveniences of metal braces.

The Invisalign Evaluation

Your Invisalign treatment begins with a visit with Dr. Rich so he can perform a comprehensive exam. He’ll evaluate your orthodontic needs by taking photos, x-rays, and impressions to create a 3-D virtual model of your teeth.

Using Invisalign’s proprietary software, Dr. Rich can plan out your entire treatment, step by step, so a custom dental lab can fabricate your customized aligners.

Wearing Your Invisalign Aligners

When your Invisalign aligners are ready, we’ll have you return to our Temple dental office. Dr. Rich will send you home with your customized aligners and instructions for wearing them.

You’ll receive a series of crystal-clear aligners that will move your teeth progressively over about 12 to 15 months. Wear each set for two to three weeks (we’ll tell you exactly how long depending on your needs), then switch to the next in the series.

Set the goal of wearing your Invisalign aligners for at least 22 hours a day. They’re convenient because you can remove them for brushing and flossing, but it can be tempting to take a break and remove them for more extended periods.

Don’t do this! The longer you wear your aligners each day, the faster you’ll achieve the desired results. And wasn’t that the whole point of choosing Invisalign in the first place?

Problems That Invisalign Corrects

As an Invisalign Preferred Provider, Dr. Rich has completed over 100 cases and continues to perform 50 a year. With this experience and expertise, he can use Invisalign to correct numerous orthodontic issues:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Crowded teeth
  • Overlapping teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite

The first step is to call Temple Dental Trails to arrange a dental appointment with Dr. Rich. He’ll evaluate your needs and explain all your options to straighten crooked teeth including Invisalign and traditional braces.

Frequently Asked Questions

picture of invisalign clear braces in Temple TXIf you are an adult who would like to straighten your teeth but don’t want to deal with traditional braces, Invisalign may be the solution you need. This progressive orthodontic system uses a series of comfortable, clear aligners to nudge your teeth gently into their ideal position.

Will Invisalign work for me?

You are a good candidate for Invisalign if your teeth are healthy and your gums are free of disease. You need a strong, sturdy base to support the movement that your teeth will make over time.

Good oral health also tells us that you are committed to following through with your dental care. Compliance and discipline are crucial elements to the success of Invisalign treatment. Invisalign trays are removable for eating and brushing and flossing, but they must be worn at least 22 hours per day to achieve the desired results in the shortest amount of time.

Teeth Straightening in Temple, TX

Whether or not you’re are a good candidate also depends mainly on the type of dental work you need. Invisalign is an excellent short-term orthodontic that can address many alignment issues like crooked, gapped, or crowded teeth. However, if you need to correct underlying issues like overbites and underbites, you may be a better candidate for traditional braces.

If you’re considering Invisalign in Temple and have questions, please contact Temple Dental Trails and Dr. Richard Leung will be happy to sit down with you to discuss your needs.

image of invisalign clear braces | Temple tXOne significant benefit of Invisalign treatment in Temple is that the clear braces are very comfortable to wear and virtually unnoticeable. This is because the aligner trays are made of a clear, smooth plastic that won’t irritate the tissues in your mouth.

The comfort of Invisalign is one of the things that make them so popular with adults and older teens. Today, Invisalign makes orthodontic treatment efficient and more comfortable than ever.

How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign works by using a set of clear aligners designed to move your teeth into the desired position progressively. When you first get your Invisalign aligners, you will probably notice that they have a very snug fit that lasts for the first couple of days.

But in a short time, you will find that the aligners start to feel looser.  You notice the change because the aligners are doing their job and gradually shifting the position of your teeth. When this happens, you know they’re working!

Benefits of Invisalign

Invisalign aligners are not only comfortable, but they can be removed for brushing, flossing, and eating. You can continue to eat all the foods you enjoy, and you don’t have to worry about food debris getting stuck in your braces.

How Does Invisalign Work | Temple TX DentistIf you’re an adult considering orthodontics to improve the appearance of your smile, you might consider Invisalign as an option to straighten your teeth. Many of our adult patients do not want to deal with the same silver brackets and wires that their teenagers are wearing and so we offer Invisalign as an alternative to traditional orthodontics.

Invisalign Treatment Process in Temple, TX

To get started, we gather the necessary data to create your Invisalign aligners. We take impressions, make models, take x-rays, and plan your treatment information to send to the dental lab where we will create your trays. Once you receive your trays, you will need to wear them at least twenty-two hours per day for the best results.

You will receive a series of clear trays and change them out approximately every two weeks. Each tray will be slightly different and gently move your teeth to your desired location.

We will still keep regular appointments with you in our office so that we can monitor your treatment and make sure that it’s on track. You will be able to monitor your progress visually because Invisalign is completely clear and nearly invisible.

Once you complete your orthodontic treatment, we will make a retainer for you to wear to keep your teeth from drifting back to their original location.

image of patient holding their invisalign invisible braces | Temple TXInvisalign clear braces have changed a lot about the way we approach orthodontic treatment. For years, the only option available for treating alignment issues was traditional bracket and wire braces.

While metal braces are still the best option for certain types of alignment problems, Invisalign has made it possible for millions of people to obtain a perfectly straight, beautiful smile quickly.

What are the benefits of Invisalign?

Invisalign offers several benefits that are not available with traditional braces:

  • Discreet –Invisalign uses clear plastic aligner trays that are virtually invisible. You can achieve a beautiful smile without the embarrassment of metal braces that impact your appearance.
  • Comfortable – One of the major complaints with traditional braces is the discomfort and irritation that results from having metal in the mouth. Invisalign trays are made of a smooth plastic material that is comfortable and will not irritate sensitive tissue in the mouth.
  • Removable – Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign aligner trays are removable for eating, brushing and flossing.
  • Improved Oral Hygiene – Since they are removable, food will not get stuck in the trays, and you can brush and floss thoroughly, which is essential for good oral health.
  • Efficient Treatment – Treatment times vary from person to person, but in many cases, we can complete Invisalign treatment in as little as a year.

Invisalign Improves Your Oral Health

A straight, proportionate smile is beautiful to look at, but it’s also optimal for your oral health for two reasons:

Straight Teeth Are Easy to Clean

If your teeth are crooked, crowded, or overlap each other, you know it can be difficult or impossible to brush and floss them adequately. Your toothbrush can’t reach all the surfaces, and you can’t slide the floss easily between crowded teeth.

The results of inadequate oral hygiene are cavities and periodontal (gum) disease. So you’re not just dealing with an orthodontic problem when you straighten your teeth with Invisalign in Temple, TX; you’re also protecting your oral health because your toothbrush and floss can reach all tooth surfaces.

A clean smile is a healthy smile, which is much easier to achieve with straight, perfectly aligned teeth.

The Problem with a Misaligned Dental Bite

Your dental bite is the way your upper and lower teeth meet when you bite down. Crooked teeth are often the result of a misaligned dental bite, which can lead to several oral health problems:

  • Dental wear and chipped or broken teeth – If your teeth don’t evenly meet when you close your jaw, you bite down harder on one side of your mouth than the other. Your teeth are very durable, but they’re not meant to absorb so much biting force, and they may chip, break, or fracture.
  • Problems with your jaw joint – The joint that controls the up and down and side-to-side movement of your jaw is called the temporomandibular joint or TMJ. When there’s a problem with this joint, we call it TMD or temporomandibular joint disorder. Problems with your TMJ can occur because of a misaligned dental bite and cause pain in your face, neck, or jaw.

Since Invisalign straightens your teeth and corrects overbites, underbites, and crossbites, it minimizes the risk of dental wear and TMJ problems.

Why You Must Wear Your Retainer

You wore your Invisalign clear aligners religiously for 22 hours every day as instructed. You couldn’t be happier with the results, and the process was much easier than you thought it would be. But you’re glad it’s over, and you love your new, straighter smile.

Now you want to maintain those results by wearing your retainer as instructed by your Temple, TX Invisalign dentist. You see, your teeth have the ability to move throughout life. This continuous movement is why we can straighten teeth for patients of all ages.

And the fact that teeth move is why you need to wear your retainer. Simply put, a retainer “retains” your teeth in their newly straightened position. If you don’t wear it, your teeth will relapse into their original crooked position, and you’ll undo all the results you worked so hard to achieve.

How long you’ll need to wear your retainer depends on your individual needs. Some Invisalign patients need to wear them overnight while others may only need to wear them a few hours a day.

Is Invisalign Treatment Right for You?

Invisalign is an excellent option for adults and teens who want a straighter smile, and if you have mild to moderate tooth misalignment, it might be the right solution for you.

If you need orthodontics in Temple, TX but aren’t sure which approach is right for you, please call Temple Dental Trails to arrange an appointment with Dr. Rich. After meeting with you, he can tell you what your options are and if Invisalign is the best choice for you.

Invisalign Technology

Cone Beam CT (CBCT)

We use dental cone beam CT imaging (CBCT) to measure the quantity and quality of bone before implant placement, find complex infections for root canals, and plan Invisalign treatment. Modern CBCTs combine ultra-low-dose radiographic imaging with state-of-the-art 3-D diagnostics to show us the relationships between bones, teeth, nerves, tissue, and airways to help us develop a highly accurate plan for treatment.

We use the term "cone beam" because digital X-rays are projected in a carefully controlled cone-shaped beam. A rotating arm moves the imaging system in a complete circle around your head. All you have to do is stand and let the scanner do the work.

CBCT imaging fits your busy schedule because it’s fast, easy, and totally painless. The process takes a minute or less to complete and provides us with highly accurate views of oral and facial bone structure.
