Researchers in the dental field are continuously working to gain a better understanding of oral disease to provide methods for integrating those findings in clinical settings.

There are several strains of bacteria that can be found in the mouth. In a recent study, researchers collected biofilms between the teeth of 25 adults with no dental caries (decay). It was found that Streptococcus mutans, a cavity-producing bacteria, was present in 28% of the sites tested, even though the subjects had no existing decay.
